The first official trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s much-anticipated Gran Turismo: The Movie has been released, and it’s a high-octane adrenaline rush. The film, which is slated to hit theaters on August 11, stars Orlando Bloom and David Harbour as an unlikely duo that will drive fans wild with excitement.

In a surprising pairing, the film unites Bloom, best known for his role as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings franchise, and Harbour, popular for his portrayal of Hopper in Stranger Things. The two actors bring an electrifying dynamic to the screen as they strive to transform a talented gamer into a professional race car driver.

The film is based on the remarkable true story of Jann Mardenborough, who rose from the ranks of Gran Turismo gaming to become a professional race car driver, thanks to his impressive skills in a series of Nissan competitions. The movie, produced by PlayStation Studios, offers a thrilling wish-fulfillment tale for gamers and racing enthusiasts alike.

Sony Pictures recently unveiled a new poster featuring Harbour as Jack Salter, a retired race car driver who mentors Mardenborough, played by Archie Madekwe. Bloom stars as Danny Moore, a motorsport marketing executive, completing the high-powered trio.

The Gran Turismo movie pays homage to the video game series, which began in 1997 on the original PlayStation. Blomkamp has gone to great lengths to ensure that the film captures the authentic experience of the game, employing innovative camera techniques that bring The Real Driving Simulator to life on the big screen.

Blomkamp spoke to PlayStation about the groundbreaking camerawork, highlighting the use of FPV drones with IMAX sensor-approved cameras and high-speed drone work. The filmmaker also recreated iconic camera angles from the game, like the third-person chase perspective and the driver’s POV, adding familiar touches that fans will appreciate.

As the Gran Turismo movie races towards its theatrical debut, fans can anticipate an action-packed, heart-pumping cinematic experience that stays true to the spirit of the beloved racing video game series.
